How Strategic UX Design Turned a Complex Lab Platform into a Scalable SaaS Product

When a product carries serious technical weight, the design challenge is rarely about aesthetics. It is about making complexity feel manageable, even invisible. That was exactly the situation when ZIFO, a global leader in scientific data and lab informatics, began building Cuttle, a unified SaaS platform designed to bring order to the fragmented world of laboratory management.

The vision was ambitious. The execution required a partner who could work at the intersection of systems thinking, user research, and product design. That partner was Alien Design.

The Problem: A Platform Too Powerful to Use

ZIFO’s platform needed to serve an unusually diverse set of users, from lab administrators and analysts to IT support, scientists, and compliance officers. Each role carried its own workflows, pain points, and mental models.

The problems were specific and operational. Lab admins had no reliable way to forecast demand or maintain data integrity at scale. Analysts were manually re-entering data across multiple systems, missing protocol steps, and operating without confidence in instrument calibration status.
